The first step to a healthy smile is an effective toothbrush. Here are some tips to make sure your smile stays bright and healthy through caring for your toothbrush.

First, make sure you are storing your toothbrush properly. Toothbrushes should be kept in open air, away from other toothbrushes. This reduces bacterial growth and reduces the risk of cross-contamination. If you must keep your toothbrush in a closed space, say for traveling purposes, make sure you take it out and air it out as much as possible. Do not store multiple toothbrushes in the same zip-top bag while traveling, as this creates cross-contamination. Do not allow toothbrush heads to touch, as bacteria spreads from brush to brush easily.

Second, make sure you are replacing your toothbrush frequently. Toothbrushes only last every 3-4 months! This means you should replace your toothbrush every season of the year. Take the opportunity to treat yourself! There are many colors and styles available, even in adult sizes. Try using an electric toothbrush with a timer on it, or just purchase a conventional toothbrush in your favorite color. Make it fun!

Third, make sure your toothbrush is yours and yours alone. Never share a toothbrush with anyone else, as this spreads bacteria and other germs, food particles, disease, and infection from mouth to mouth. If someone else uses your toothbrush, throw it away right off and purchase a new one as soon as possible.
